This chart shows the number of direct right retirees from a basic pension scheme in France as of December 31, 2020, according to the retirement scheme. Out of the **** million direct right retirees from a French basic scheme, about four million were covered by multiple basic schemes while benefiting from a main scheme.
The retirement pension can be composed of several distinct elements, governed by different allocation rules. The first element is the main direct right benefit. It is acquired in exchange for professional activity and therefore the contributions paid (and the validation of quarters earned) related to it. This benefit can be transferred to the surviving spouse upon the beneficiary's death. This is then called a derived right benefit, often referred to as a survivor's pension, which can be combined with a main direct right benefit.
