The number of active BBVA customers in 2023 amounted to **** million. This figure represents an increase of more than * percent compared to 2022. More than half of them are mobile users, which is not surprising considering it is the second Spanish bank with the most digital customers, only behind Santander.

Second time's the charm?

It is worth noting that the number of BBVA customers could increase substantially by 2025 if the hostile takeover bid launched on Banco Sabadell during the second quarter of 2024 succeeds. Reviewing the recent history of the Basque financial institution, it can be seen that this is not the first time it has resorted to acquisitions or mergers to expand its assets and resources. In fact, it already tried to acquire the Catalan bank during the general banking restructuring phase that took place in Spain in 2021, but at that time the operation did not come to fruition.

Climbing the ranks

And not only would the number of customers be positively affected. If the takeover bid is completed, BBVA would consolidate itself as the second Spanish bank with the largest volume of assets, ahead of CaixaBank. In this regard, BBVA already holds the second position in other rankings such as market capitalization or brand value, as well as being among the top 10 IBEX ** participants with the highest dividend yield per share.
