Among the various devices to protect one’s home, the most effective, according to three quarters of French people, is the alarm or security siren connected to an external monitoring center, but those that are standalone or connected to a smartphone are also considered effective by more than 60 percent of French people.

Characteristics of thefts in France

Forcing the door is the most commonly used method of break-in during a burglary for nearly two thirds of burglars, compared to nearly a quarter who prefer to force the window of the home. Cylinder break-in is the most common modus operandi among these thieves; this technique involves inserting a suitable tool into the lock to break it by forcing it, allowing a hook to be passed over it to open the door. With this method of break-in, the door of the home can be opened in less than a minute.
In burglaries without break-in targeting main residences in France, more than half of burglars enter the home through an unlocked opening, while nearly a third did not even need to enter to commit their crime.
Regarding the value of stolen items during burglaries, it is estimated at less than 1,000 U.S. dollars for 38 percent of French households, compared to more than 5,000 U.S. dollars for 18 percent.

Acts of vandalism in France

As for the value of the costs of damage caused by acts of vandalism against French homes, it is estimated at less than 100 U.S. dollars for 30 percent of households, compared to more than 500 U.S. dollars for 10 percent. The most recurring acts of vandalism against homes in France involve damage: graffiti on walls, damaged plants, damaged fences, etc. In fact, more than two thirds of French households victimized by acts of vandalism suffered at least one damage, compared to about a quarter who suffered total destruction (mailboxes, torn-off shutters...).
