The source adds the following information: "Mortality rate of a population with a standard age distribution. Since most causes of death vary significantly according to the age and sex of individuals, the use of standardized mortality rates enhances comparability between periods and between countries, as these rates aim to measure the frequency of deaths independently of differences in the age structure of populations. The reference population used is the 'European standard population' as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). Detailed statistics, broken down by 65 causes of death, are available in the database."
