The epidemic mainly affects the African continent and the Middle East. Afghanistan is currently the most affected country, with nearly 36,000 cases recorded during the first four months of the year. It is followed by Zambia, which reported more than 20,000 cases during the same period, including 637 deaths, the highest number in the world.
These figures are most likely underestimated compared to the reality.
