In a survey conducted in Mexico in November 2020, more than half of the participants who owned pets (** percent) stated that they acquired their pet as a gift from a family member or friend. The second most frequently mentioned way of acquisition by the respondents (** percent) was finding or rescuing the pet on the street. Additionally, more than a quarter of the respondents admitted to having bought or adopted their pet from a shelter or foundation, respectively.
