This statistic represents the number of people working in foundations and endowment funds in France between 2001 and 2021. During this period, the number of employees in this type of nonprofit organization doubled.
Endowment funds differ from foundations and associations. Established in 2008 based on the model of American endowment funds, endowment funds are "a private legal entity with a nonprofit purpose that receives and manages by capitalizing assets and rights of any kind that are given to it free of charge and irrevocably," according to law no. 2008-776. The main objective of an endowment fund is to manage a sum of money or assets entrusted to it, whereas an association seeks to create a social project without dedicated assets.
