Monkeypox is a tropical disease originating from the equatorial region of Africa. This disease is considered endemic in many countries such as Nigeria, Cameroon, and Congo. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, local authorities have reported more than 1,000 infections since the beginning of 2022. However, it is only since spring 2022 that several cases have been detected outside its original area. Many patients had stayed in sub-Saharan Africa, authorities specify; however, several cases of monkeypox have been diagnosed in people who had not traveled to these countries.
The symptoms of monkeypox are primarily characterized by a fever outbreak, significant fatigue, muscle and back pain. Then appear the skin eruptions symptomatic of monkeypox patients. According to the WHO, these spots can resemble those of chickenpox and are mainly concentrated on the palms of the hands, under the feet, and on the face. Without treatment, the symptoms disappear after about four weeks.
