This statistic presents the evolution of energy consumption in the transport sector in France between 1990 and 2022. In 2021, following the gradual lifting of traffic restrictions related to the health crisis, energy consumption for transport use strongly increased (+ **** percent, after - **** percent in 2020), reaching *** TWh, but remained below its 2019 level (*** TWh). Petroleum products (diesel, gasoline, jet fuel), mainly for road transport, overwhelmingly dominate the energy mix with ** percent of the total. This is complemented, in 2021, by * percent of incorporated biofuels, * percent electricity which mainly powers rail transport, and *** percent natural gas (buses, heavy trucks, utility vehicles).
