Amazon reported an average water usage effectiveness (WUE) of **** for its global AWS data centers in 2024. This was superior to both Meta's and Microsoft's 2023 WUE figures, which were the latest figures available as of September 2025. Google, another major public cloud data center operator, does not disclose WUE figures for its facilities.
WUE is a metric used to measure how efficiently a facility uses water. It is calculated by dividing a facility's total water usage in liters by the energy consumed by its IT equipment in kilowatt-hours, with a lower figure thus indicating greater efficiency.
