Global municipal solid waste generation per capita is projected to grow by nearly 50 percent by 2050, surpassing one kilogram per person per day, in a scenario where no urgent action is taken. Meanwhile, in a circular economy scenario, which considers global municipal waste generation to fall to 2020 levels by 2050, per capita generation would drop to 0.62 kilograms per day by the latter year. 

The world population is forecast to grow by two billion people by the end of the century, with the growth focused in Africa.
