According to a survey conducted in South Korea in 2024, around ** percent of respondents stated that they used either their personal cars or rental cars to reach Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) tourist locations. About ** percent reported using tourist buses. The DMZ was established as a buffer zone between North and South Korea under the 1953 armistice agreement and divides the Korean Peninsula in two. It also serves as a neutral meeting place for inter-Korean talks. While the DMZ itself is demilitarized, the borders on either side are heavily militarized, with large buffer zones keeping civilians away except for select areas open to tourists. Most tourist locations related to the DMZ are located in nearby settlements.
