The total production of hydrocarbons by the Serbian company Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) reached around **** million metric tons of oil equivalent in 2024. Domestic oil exploration projects accounted for the largest share, followed by domestic gas production activities.
Nis, the largest energy company in Serbia, is majority-owned by Russian Gazprom and Gazprom Neft, which together hold a 56.15-percent stake. This made it a target of U.S. sanctions on Gazprom's subsidiaries as part of a package of restrictions in response to the war in Ukraine. Another major stakeholder of the company is the government of Serbia, with percent.
Not only is Nis active in Serbia, its largest market, but also in several other Southeastern European countries. At the end of September 2024, it operated 325 petrol stations in Serbia and over 80 stations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, and Romania combined. In Serbia, it occupied ** percent of the motor fuel retail market in the first nine months of 2024.
