The weighted average electricity consumption of chlor-alkali production in Europe decreased slightly to **** kilowatt-hours per metric ton of chlorine produced in 2023, down from **** kilowatt-hours per metric ton in 2022. This decline can be attributed to the lower production rates during 2022 to 2023, which allowed electrolyzers to operate at lower current densities, thus requiring less energy per ton produced. However, if energy consumption were calculated using the higher current densities required for increased production rates, as seen in 2021, the 2023 figure would be higher than its actual value and as such, should not be considered indicative of a general trend.
