Nearly half of ** children who visited a public health clinic in Mexico in 2022 had dental cavities. Prevalence increased with age, with close to ** percent of those aged **** and **** affected by tooth decay. 

Dental cavities among children and teenagers

That year, children and teenagers in Mexico aged *** to ** had an average of *** permanent teeth with dental cavities, with the female population showing an average of more than teeth affected. When considering cavities in primary teeth, also known as baby teeth, this figure doubled, reaching close to **** cavities per child. 

Gum health among the younger population

Gum health among children and teenagers in Mexico showed a similar trend to that of dental health. In 2022, children and teenagers aged *** to ** were increasingly affected by gum disease as they grew. That year, the age group between *** and nine years was the group with the highest share of children with healthy gums, with close to ** percent. This was the case for only ** percent of those aged 15 to 19.
