*The 2021 version of the Compendium identified 635 health systems – with the term ‘Health system’ defined to include at least one non-federal general acute care hospital and at least one group of physicians providing comprehensive care, including primary and specialty care, who are connected with each other and with the hospital through common ownership or joint management. This definition is operationalized as having one non-federal general acute care hospital and 50 or more physicians, including 10 or more primary care physicians.
