A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) means that a foreign citizen except a national of Afghanistan, China, Nepal Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Iran, and Sri Lanka who once held a passport of India. PIO may also apply in other cases such as spouses of Indian citizens, Indian grandparents, etc.Â
As of January 2025, there were a total of nearly ***Â million Indians living in the USA. Out of this population, over ***Â million belonged to Persons of Indian origin category.
