In April 2024, a new global coral bleaching event was confirmed, with already ** percent of the coral reefs worldwide being affected. This was the fourth global coral bleaching event since records started, and the second in a decade. As of April 2025, the area affected has expanded up to ** percent, making it the worst coral bleaching event in history. The previous event lasted four years, from 2014 to 2017, and affected approximately ** percent of global coral reefs. A global bleaching event is declared when at least 12 percent of corals in every major ocean basin experience bleaching-level heat stress within 12 months.
