As of May 22, 2025, there were approximately ** green housing units certified by the national green building standard (NGBS) in the United States. New apartments in multifamily housing and mixed-use buildings makes up most of those figures. Part of the reason why is that each multifamily building certified is made up of several housing units. If the multifamily buildings were considered instead of counting each apartment, that number would be smaller than the number of single-family homes. The NGBS is a certificate focused on green residential buildings in the United States.
