The rates specific to each age group are adjusted based on the proportion of a chosen (imaginary) "standard population" within those age brackets. Next, these adjusted rates are combined across all age groups. The resulting age-standardized rate reflects the number of new cases or deaths per 100,000 individuals in a population with the identical age distribution as the selected standard population.

In 2023, lungs, colorectum and pancreas, were the cancer sites with the highest mortality rate for both genders in Germany, when not taking into account gender-specific sites. In case of gender-specific cancer sites breast cancer had the highest mortality rate for females, with ** cases per 100,000 population, while prostate cancer for males, with a mortality rate of **** per 100,000 population.
