Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) is an open standard for passwordless authentication that allows users to sign and access their resources without a username or password by using an external security key or a platform key built into a device. In 2023, nearly half of respondents among IT professionals worldwide had adopted the FIDO2 standards, which incorporate a user-controlled cryptographic authenticator with W3C Web Authentication (WebAuthn) to enable built-in multi-factor authentication without the need to rely on traditional passwords.
