Until 2014, the data refer to the province of Milan, whose functions were replaced from 2015 by the metropolitan city, without any territorial change. All the municipalities belonging to the former province became part of the new administrative unit.
In 20 years, the number of live births in the 133 municipalities constituting the metropolitan city of Milan sank by 6,379 babies, highlighting the decline of births that has affected the city and its suburbs. In particular, over the last decade, this number decreased by 23 percent, with less than 22,000 births in 2023.
