**19,936 elementary schools, 10,076 junior high schools, 151 integrated compulsory education schools, 4,856 high schools, 56 secondary schools and 1,160 special needs schools.

Correspondence high schools are not included in the survey.

According to a survey conducted among schools in Japan in fiscal year 2022, almost half of children missing school enrolled in special needs schools were undergoing treatment in a hospital. Around ** percent of children missing school enrolled in high school were undergoing treatment at home.
