Key workers are defined as belonging to the following sectors: agriculture, forestry, and fishing; mining and quarrying; manufacturing; electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply; water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities; wholesale and retail trade, repair of motorcycles and motor vehicles; transportation and storage; information and communication; financial and insurance activities; professional, scientific, and technical activities; administrative and support service activities; public administration, defense, and compulsory social security; and human health and social work activities.
Short working hours are defined as 20 hours or less per week, while working 48 hours or more per week is considered excessive.

Citation formats

Key workers are, on average, more likely to work low hours compared to non-key workers. As country income increases, the percentage of key workers working ** hours or less per week decreases, suggesting that key workers in lower-income countries are at risk of lower standards of living as they often are paid low salaries. Additionally, both key and non-key workers are less likely to work beyond ** hours per week as country income increases, as they are more likely to make more per hour and have greater labor protections.
