“Barbie” officially became “Barbillion” by garnering more than one billion dollars in revenue less than one month after its release on the big screen. Thanks to an effective marketing strategy and virality on social media, “Barbie” quickly turned into an Internet sensation, thus boosting ticket sales. The movie took the top stop as the biggest domestic debut ever for a female director, before “Captain Marvel" (2019), co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and “Frozen 2” (2019), co-directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck.

Barbenheimer: a box office success story

While the box office has been slowly recovering after the impact of COVID-19 shutdowns, global revenue still struggles to reach pre-pandemic levels. However, the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon (coined after the simultaneous release of summer blockbusters Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” on July 21, 2023) managed to defy the odds. Both movies earned a total box office revenue of *** million U.S. dollars in the United States and in Canada during their opening weekend. As of September 2023, “Oppenheimer” was Christopher Nolan’s third highest grossing movie at the domestic box office.
