The index measures food security according to the three core issues of food affordability, availability, and quality/safety. Natural resources and resilience is an optional risk adjustment factor. The index is also the weighted total of all category scores (0-100, where 100 = most favorable).

In 2022, South Africa ranked highest in the food security index in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), with a score of ****. The country followed only Morocco on the African continent. Furthermore, Kenya, Ghana, and Mali followed in SSA, with scores of **, ****, and ****, respectively. On the other hand, Nigeria, Burundi, Madagascar, and Sierra Leone had the highest food insecurity in SSA and the continent.
