Extreme drought in the Southwestern United States has recently affected California's largest reservoirs. Lake Shasta's water levels, the state's largest reservoir, were at just ** and ** percent of total capacity on July 1, 2021, and July 1, 2022, respectively. By comparison, the lake was at ** percent capacity on the same date in 2019. California's second-largest reservoir, Lake Oroville, also saw water levels plummet in 2021, to just ** percent capacity on July 1. However, many reservoirs were replenished in spring 2023 due to heavy rain and melting snowpack, with both Shasta and Oroville nearing 100 percent.
