Between 2020 and 2022, the amount of ordinary Portland cement in the cement portfolio of Heidelberg Materials has been decreasing at a fast pace. During the past years, Heidelberg Materials, which is one of the largest cement manufacturers in the world, has been increasing the use of types of cement with lower CO2 emissions than ordinary Portland cement. Clinker, which is one of the substances with the highest environmental impact, has been partially substituted by materials with a smaller footprint such as fly ash or slag cement. Nevertheless, the share of clinker in cement mixes in the EU remained high.
