Are the most valuable sports teams also the most profitable ones?

While financial metrics such as operating income have a significant influence on the valuation of a sports team, profitability is by no means a conclusive factor. In the ranking of the top 20 most valuable sports teams in 2025, only nine of the most profitable sports teams made the list. One constant in both rankings, however, is the dominance of the Dallas Cowboys, with the NFL team also coming first among franchise valuations.

What is the main source of income for sports teams?

Revenue streams can vary quite dramatically by sport, but the main sources of income for professional sports teams are from broadcasting rights, commercial deals, and matchday earnings. Among the soccer clubs with the highest revenue in 2024/25, commercial income was the main source of income for the majority of teams. In fact, commerical deals made up over half of the total revenue generated by the top three ranking teams: Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.
