In 2021, the United States Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) program documented the disposal or release of million pounds of friable asbestos from facilities. This includes any asbestos-containing material that can be crushed, crumbled, pulverized or turned to powder with the ordinary force of a human hand.
Although asbestos is not banned in the United States, it is heavily regulated by state and federal laws as asbestos exposure has been associated with a wide range of illnesses including asbestosis, an inflammatory condition affecting the lungs that can cause shortness of breath, coughing, and permanent lung damage.
