In 2019 and 2021, the Western-Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Xinjiang accounted for over half of the country's monthly average hash rate. Both provinces produce large quantities of renewable energy, Sichuan is home to many hydro-power stations, and Xinjiang has large solar farms, which also explains the seasonal variations in mining activities. Because mining Bitcoin is very energy intensive, miners relocate their operation according to the availability and price of energy.
