With 1.49 billion dollars in revenue, Top Gun: Maverick was the highest-grossing movie of 2022, closely followed by Avatar: The Way of Water, which brought in 1.4 billion U.S. dollars worldwide. However, with Top Gun: Maverick being released in the summer of 2022, and the Avatar sequel being released December 16th, Top Gun had much more time than Avatar to boost sales. Perhaps not surpisingly, given the success of the original film, Avatar: The Way of Water has broken records, by earning one billion U.S. dollars in just 14 days.

The original Avatar movie, which was released in 2009, was still the most commercially
successful movie of all time as of June 2022. The James Cameron blockbuster generated around 2.85 billion U.S. dollars in box office sales. Additionally, Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Titanic (1997) followed in second and third place, with revenues of 2.8 billion and 2.2 billion dollars, respectively.
