According to a survey focusing on renters in China's major cities, as of early 2022, ** percent of renters in Shanghai had household registrations from other provinces, which means that they were domestic migrants to Shanghai from other regions. Less than percent of renters were permanent residents of Shanghai since they were born. Due to Shanghai's economic importance in China, many Chinese citizens moved from other provinces to the municipality to find opportunities. Shanghai's very competitive housing market resulted in high demand for renting in the city.
