Asia's demand of acetic acid reached 68 percent of the global share in 2020, becoming the region where the demand for the petrochemical is the highest across the globe. North America trailed second, but by a wide margin, with around 16 percent of the global share. By contrast, Russia accounted for only two percent of the global demand of acetic acid that year. In 2021, some 7.89 million metric tons of methanol were used to produce acetic acid.
