In general, the total number of animals, including dogs and cats, received by the RSPCA in Australia has declined over the years since 2017, which is partially attributable to the pet adoption frenzy amid the pandemic. 

Adoption instead of purchase

A 2023 survey revealed that nearly ** percent of Australians acquired their pets from animal shelters. Financially speaking, adopting a rescue or shelter pet comes with lower adoption fees than purchasing from a breeder, as most rescue animals are already vaccinated, desexed, and microchipped where relevant. Aside from these upfront costs, the owners-to-be may also save on training expenses since many pets from shelters and rescues are already house-trained and previously acquainted with family life.
