*The study targets all cities in Japan as well as towns and villages in the areas around Tokyo (50km radius), Nagoya (40km radius), and Osaka (50km radius), resulting in 909 municipalities for 2021.
Bicycles include motorized bicycles with an engine of up to 50cc or 0.6 kW.
Each municipality defines the reach of its train station areas independently. However, it is thought to be within 500m.
The study defines bicycles as abandoned if the bike is not parked at a bicycle parking and if it is impossible to remove it immediately as its user left it alone.
The figures represent the total of abandoned bicycles found around train stations with at least 100 abandoned bikes.
Values have been rounded.
