In France, the foreign residents of European Union member states can vote and be elected in European and municipal elections on the grounds of their European citizenship. The extension of this right to vote to all local elections (i.e. regional and departmental elections in addition to municipal elections) is an issue that has long divided the French. In 1996, only ** percent of the population supported this idea. Between this year and 2014, this proportion fluctuated between ** and ** percent, but has steadily increased since 2014, reaching ** percent in 2021.
