The coal power sector in the United States produced *** million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCOâ‚‚) in 2024, representing an overall decrease of almost ** percent from 2005 levels. By comparison, emissions from natural gas power more than doubled during this same period. These variations are due to the shift away from coal-fired power toward gas-fired power. This transition, along with the increased uptake of renewables, has seen U.S. electric power sector COâ‚‚ emissions fall more than ** percent since 2005.Â
