The trend-indicator value (TIV) was developed by SIPRI to measure the volume of international transfers of major conventional weapons using a common unit. The TIV is based on the known unit production costs of a core set of weapons and is intended to represent the transfer of military resources rather than the financial value of the transfer.

The source mentioned the following example to better understand the calculation of the TIV value:

''The transfer of newly produced complete weapons systems: In 2017, France delivered 8 Rafale combat aircraft to Egypt. One Rafale is valued at 55 million SIPRI TIV. Therefore the delivery is valued at 440 million SIPRI TIV.''

Citation formats

As of 2020, the value of arm imports into Angola was 42 million SIPRI trend indicator value (TIV), decreasing from 169 million TIV recorded in the previous year. TIV is a measure to represent the transfer of military resources rather than the financial value of the transfer. It neither reflects prices paid for weapons nor represents current dollar values for arm transfers. Russia was the main supplier of weapons to Angola in the entire period under consideration. Arms included aircraft, air defense systems, armored vehicles, artillery, engines, naval weapons, sensors, and ships.
