Officially released on June 1, 2021, EllaLink claims to be the first high-capacity optical fiber cable to connect Latin America and Europe. Overall, it is approximately 6,000-kilometers long and directly connects Brazil, Cabo Verde, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, and France –including both continental France and its overseas department of French Guyana, in South America. The cable was projected in 2012 and its construction cost around 150 million euros. EllaLink has a design capacity of 100 Terabits per second (Tbit/s) and an estimated service life of 25 years, while its latency is expected to remain below 60 milliseconds.
