Over the course of 2020, 75,891 deaths caused by COVID-19 were reported to the authorities in Italy. In total, the number of deaths in the country surpassed 746 thousand, the highest figure registered since World War II. This statistic compares the number of deaths in 2020 to the average number of deaths in the five years between 2015 and 2019. In total, deaths in 2020 exceeded the historical average by more than 100.5 thousand individuals. The most dramatic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic was recorded among Italians aged 80 years or older.
