In the first half of 2020, the number of requests for unemployment benefits increased by ** percent compared to the same period of 2019. The months in which the number of applications peaked were March and April 2020, during the first wave of coronavirus infections and related lockdown. The number of requests by male employees experienced a large growth compared to those submitted by female employees. However, since March 2020 the Italian government has imposed a ban on layoffs of employees for companies due to economic reasons. The measure has been implemented to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on the job market.
