The United States vented or flared 323.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas in 2023. This was an increase from the previous year, when the vented or flared natural gas volume was around 271.7 billion cubic feet. Venting and flaring has come under increased scrutiny due to its polluting nature and contribution to climate change. Some states, such as North Dakota, ban venting (the direct release of methane) altogether.
