Definition of enrollment rate:
1. Kindergartens and integrated centers for childhood education and care: the ratio of children in the first grade who graduated from kindergarten.
2. Senior high schools: the ratio of children who graduated ninth grade and directly enrolled in tenth grade in school education institutions, including those who are enrolled for courses of correspondence education.
3. Universities and junior colleges (enrolled directly on graduation): the ratio of students who graduated twelfth grade and directly enrolled in tertiary education institutions.
4. Universities and junior colleges (including those who did not enroll directly on graduation): the ratio of students who graduated twelfth grade and enrolled in tertiary education institutions after a year or more gaps.

Non-compulsory secondary education

After graduation from junior high school, compulsory education in Japan comes to an end, and students may either find employment or continue their academic path by studying at a senior high school, technical college, or university.
