The Spanish banking landscape is going through major changes as many of its largest banks are planning to merge. The mergers of CaixaBank with Bankia and Unicaja with Liberbank will create a more compact yet unequal banking system. CaixaBank and Bankia will lead the ranking with nearly billion euros in assets, followed at a considerable distance by BBVA. Together with Santander, this banking triad will lead a system where larger banks are positioned at a great distance from medium-sized banks such as Bankinter or Kutxabank. BBVA and Sabadell also planned to merge, however, such plan was cancelled at the end of 2020. If it had taken place, the merger of BBVA and Sabadell would have followed CaixaBank and Bankia very closely.
