In 2019, ** German universities and university partnerships were awarded the title "University of Excellence" by the German government and federal states. The Aachen Technical University was in first place regarding third party funding per professor at * euros, followed by the Munich Technical University and Heidelberg University.
This title is awarded within the so-called excellence strategy framework, which is supposed to fund university research in Germany to further strengthen Germany as a country of science in terms of international competition. The universities which have been awarded the title receive millions of euros worth of state funding.
