There were six fatalities due to terrorist attacks in the European Union in 2023. Terrorist attacks were relatively low prior to 2015, with 2011 a clear outlier due to the July 22 attacks in Norway where a lone right-wing terrorist murdered 77 people in a single attack. The two years with the most deaths due to terrorism are 2015 and 2016, where a wave of Islamic terrorist attacks inspired and sometimes directed by ISIS swept across Europe.
