In financial year 2024, India's production volume of wheat during the rabi season was around *** million metric tons. Wheat production across the south Asian country reflected a steady growth over the years. Wheat is the second most common food crop grown globally. 

Wheat production and export

India is the third-largest producer of wheat worldwide. The growth and development in wheat production have improved due to the scientific methods and variety of wheat, which in turn has increased crop production and productivity. Over two billion U.S. dollars worth of wheat was exported from India to the world in 2022.

Wheat consumption

  India is ranked second globally for wheat consumption. Wheat is not only the major source of protein, vitamins, and carbohydrates but also an important staple food for a balanced diet in India. Wheat is consumed mainly in the North Indian region in the form of Roti, Chapati, and Parathas which are all essentially flat breads. The major wheat-producing states are Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
