Deep sea mining is anticipated by many to be the new frontier in mining, with valuable untapped resources just waiting to be found. Environmental concerns about this emerging practice also abound, however. As of July 2019, a land area of 161,211.2 kilometers was granted by the Chinese government for deep sea mining exploration, which corresponded to 263 different licenses.
