In 2019, Nigerian households spent on average 6.1 percent of their total annual expenditure on health. This share was lower in South South and South West, whereas the expenditure peaked at 10.3 percent in the South Eastern states.
Data on health insurance coverage show that only 1.4 percent of people living in rural areas had a health insurance. Overall, insurance coverage in Nigeria is very low. In particular, among individuals without education the coverage was below one percent.
